Instructional Plan: You will understand how to use syllable conventions to help sound out and spell words
Objective: You will be able to determine how many syllables are in a word
Introduction: I will write down different terms on the board. I will call on students to come up to the board and separate the words into different sections with dashes. The student must then sound out each section of the word and tell the class how many syllables are in that word. For example the word “predictable” will be written on the board. The student must separate the word like this pre-dict-ab-le. The student will then write how many syllables are in that word. In this case the number of syllables would be four.
Model: I will define for the class what syllables are. “Syllables are an uninterrupted segment of speech consisting of a vowel sound, a diphthong, or a syllabic consonant, with or without preceding or following consonant sounds.” I will then provide examples of different syllable counts. “Eye, sty act, and should are English words of one syllable. Eyelet, stifle, enact and shouldn’t are two-syllable words” (Web). http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/syllable
Guided Practice: Students will be broken up into seven groups of three. Your group will have to find a variety number of syllables in a list of words written on the board. Students will have syllable categories one through four. Students must place three words in each category.
Independent Practice: You will have a list of 10 words. You must breakdown those words into sections like we did earlier in class (pre-dict-ab-le). You will then give me the syllable count and write what the word means in your own words.
