Phonemic Analysis

Remember in class: Yesterday we discussed how to use different sounds to pronounce words

Objective: You will be able to pronounce and define a variety of words by using strategies practiced in class.

Introduction: I will split the class in half. On one side, students will have terms. On the other half of the classroom, the students will have the definition that goes with the term. Students will have to find their correct counterpart. Once the students have found each other, they will say the word and definition.

Model: I will demonstrate to the class different strategies that are used to define the meaning and correctly pronounce different words. I will use the clapping method when doing syllable break down, Also, I will provide Venn diagrams and word/definition matching.

Guided practice: The class will be broken up into seven groups of three. Each group will select three vocabulary words from the list of 21 words listed on the board. The students will then use three different strategies learned in class and present why these strategies would work best for the words they chose.

Independent Practice: You will take 5 vocabulary words and breakdown each word. Provide the meaning, the syllable count, if there is a morpheme present or not, and the strategy you used to help with your findings. You will have a 15 minute time limit.

Below is an example of a word match. The words on the right must be matched to the definition on the left. Students with the term must find student with the correct definition. Example: Money-you can earn this when you collect cans and bottles and take them to a recycling center.
